Omega wall (geogrid-reinforced soil retaining wall) is gaining iincreasing popularity due to its cost effectiveness and ease in construction. Internal stability analysis is a critical steo in designing suck structures, which to a great extent determines the layout and density of reinforcements. Maximum load in each reinforcement layer and the potential failure surface are two critical parameters in internal stability analysis. ReSSA was used to investigate the maximum load in each reinforcement layer and its lateral location with different reinforcement densities and different backfilled soils. The effects of reinforcement creep on the two parameters were also analyzed.
OMEGA BLOCK is the main structural component of the wall. The mass of the block helps provide the strength to restrain the material behind the wall.
The
BASE is what the first row of blocks set on. Thich of the base as the foundation f the wall. The first row or course of blocks is set below ground level. The base sits on the foundation soil or the existing soil that makes up the site. That existing soil must be soild and well compacted. The base is used to make sure the wall is level that the wall has a solid foundation to sit on.
DRAINAGE behind the wall is also important. Drainage can be accomplished by using granular material and even adding drain tile with openings through the wall that allow the water from the drain tile to pass through.
BACKFULL OR RETAINED SOIL is the common term for the earth used to fill the area behind the wall. In some cases, this is the soil that was excavated to make room for the wall. However, in many cases, additional material must be hauled on the site to make up this back fill.
GEOGRID / HIGH STRENGTH GEOFABRIC is necessary any time there is going to be substantial load on the back of a wall. This type of materials is special high strength polymer "netting" designed for reinforcing retaining walls. If there is a large load to be restrained by tge wall, such as a driveway with cars, a building or a large slopinf hill, geogrid is needed. The reinforcement consists of a geotextile fabric or grid that goes between layers of the block, back into, and is held in place by reinforced soil.
